Warm ― cloudy ― gleamy. Letter from Lady James.

Rose unwell. Hair cut: man had been in the Crimea ― battle of Tchernaya ― & afterwards at Solferino ― 8 years soldier. Settled here wife, 3 children. Landlord adds 50fr. per ann. to rent charge for shop. ―

Worked at 10 duplicates ― till 3. ― when Lady Duncan & Miss D. came. & at 3.30, Lord & Lady Fitzwilliam & a 3rd daughter. Very kindly simple plain people: delighted with drawings ― & bought 7 of the Corniche, & 7 of the new 25 Palestine set!

At 5 ― set off to ask the Cortazzi to come here ― but they were at dinner. Left a card on Mrs. Norton.

Dined at 6.30. & afterwards out till 10.30. I am as far as Oneglia on the road to Genova.
