Came by 7.30 train to town ― at 10. Bothered as to how to arrange myself & paintings. Tried, but failed, to get the man who has taken the rooms below, to let one to me. Pouring rain. Cab to city. Saw poor W.N. who is completely ruined. Most miserable & sad! ――

Came to Foords. & back to Stratford Place. Half uncertain if I shall pack up all & go into Pantechnicon ― or for the present try to shift on. Went to Daddy Hunts ― who has sold his picture for 1300£ called at Lord Westbury’s but saw no one: & lastly ― at F. Lushingtons.

(At 11 ― Evelyn Baring & Gen. Straham called ― very dind that ― surrounded as they are by friends & gaiety. J.C. Musters also called.)

Came back at 6.30 ― or 7. ― & now 8.30 am going to try to eat some dinner: but I am depressed & sad beyond all belief.
