Sunday, 17 January 1864

Tremendous cold & gray: snow, almost to the foot of S. Salvador: no sun.

Wrote all the morning, & lunched at the De Vere’s: returning home at 3. ―

Set out again & walked to Ascension & One gun ― but it was bitter cold, & by the time I got back, 6 ― I was half knocked up.

Nevertheless, I dressed ― putting on double flannels all over, & went to the Palace, where the Evening was remarkably cheerful & pleasant.
