Bright & cold: The house is not so cold as usual.

Breakfast 8.15, sate with the gouty Bern, & wrote 11. letters of money asking. Lunch: ― & afterwards ― at 3 ― walked with Jane Husey Hunt as far as Malling, & then alone to Mt. Caburn. Nothing could be lovelier than those beautiful downs ― for there was a pale haze over all, ― & the sky was flecked with gray & pink-gilt clouds ― while Lewes was as it were in a cavern of dim gray mist.

Home by 4.30 & sate till 5.30. Currie. Dinner ―

The Costers are all going to N. Zealand.

Evening pleasant.

Bed at 10.
