Life goes on badly so ―――― downward.

Fine all day ― gray.

Pull up in God’s name ―.

Μὴ χάσης τὰ μυαλά.[1]

Rose ― alas! little before 8. ― All day ― yet very interruptedly ― penned out Ithaca sketches.

C. Fortescue came ― &
S.W. Clowes. ― (how strange that such happiness should come twice to a man ― to so many never al all!)

At 6.30. to St. John’s Lodge. ― what a lovely place ― & how “beautiful within!”

Walked in garden, Lady Goldsmid not being in. ― Saw the St. Dionysius “degraded” ― & Lee’s picture in its place. But I can’t say I grieved much thereat. Came, Augustus Goldsmid ― not too agreable.

1863-07-24

Queer man, Augustus Goldsmid. ― Lady G. ever pleasant & good. Sir F. came in late. Miss Jekyll later.

Cab home by 11.
